The short answer
We scored 11 lion's mane supplements sold in the UK out of 100, with capsules and tablets in one group and powders in another. Nutrition Geeks scored highest of the capsules and tablets and New Leaf came second. Alpha01 is the best value, Hifas da Terra has the most beta-glucans and Yin & Yang Superfoods is the top powder.
What we found
- Capsules and tablets scored from 48 to 74 out of 100, and powders from 10 to 76.
- The capsules and tablets hold from 125 mg to 1,400 mg of lion's mane extract a day.
- Big figures like 28,000 mg are what the extract was made from, not what you take.
- Prices ran from 10p to £1.93 a day with delivery, checked on 17 October 2026.
- Every product that names a part uses the fruiting body, and only one gives beta-glucans on its label.
Our picks
Lion's mane is everywhere right now, from your feed to the high street, and the packs don't make comparing them easy. We scored 11 of the best-selling and best-known lion's mane supplements in the UK out of 100, on how much lion's mane you get, the price a day, how much the label tells you, reviews, delivery and returns, and how easy each one is to take. Capsules and tablets are scored as one group and powders as another. Tap a pick to see its scores.
How all 11 scored
Each product gets points for six measures, weighted like this. How we scored has the rules for each one.
- 25 Lion's mane amounts
- 20 Price a day
- 20 Label transparency
- 15 Customer reviews
- 10 Delivery and returns
- 10 Ease of use
Capsules and tablets are scored against each other, and powders against each other. A gram of whole mushroom powder isn't a gram of extract, and two of the powders give no daily amount, so mixing them would make neither score fair.

These are the amounts in one day's dose, as each label sets it. The capsules and tablets hold from 125 mg of extract a day (Nutravita) to 1,400 mg (Alpha01). Every product that names a part names the fruiting body, the mushroom's cap and stem, and none says mycelium.

What to look for on the label
The amount a day, not the big number
Most packs lead with a figure like "4,000 mg" or "28,000 mg". That's the extract ratio multiplied out, roughly how much dried mushroom went into the extract, not how much you take [1]. Alpha01's "28,000 mg" is 1,400 mg of a 20:1 extract, and Nutrition Geeks' "4,000 mg" is 267 mg of a 15:1 extract. Ours does it too, as "5,000 mg lion's mane" is 500 mg of a 10:1 extract. UK labels must give the amount in a day's dose [2], and that's the figure to compare. It's a bit like a juice carton listing the weight of the apples rather than how much juice is inside.
Extract or whole powder
Whole powder is the dried mushroom, ground. An extract is concentrated from it, and its ratio tells you roughly how much mushroom went into each gram [1]. That's why we compare extracts with extracts and whole powders with whole powders.
The part used
Lion's mane supplements are made from the fruiting body, the mushroom itself, or the mycelium, the root-like threads it grows from. The fruiting body is richer in compounds called hericenones, and the mycelium in erinacines [3]. No published trial has compared the two, so neither part has been shown to be better. Mycelium is often grown on grain, which stays in the product [4]. Two of the 11 don't name the part on the page we link to.
Beta-glucans and polysaccharides
Beta-glucans are the sugars mushrooms are best known for, and a pure lion's mane sample has tested at around 42% to 44% [4]. Polysaccharide figures are a rougher guide, because unless the test removes them they also count starch and fillers such as maltodextrin [5]. Four of the capsules and tablets give a polysaccharide figure, and only Hifas da Terra gives beta-glucans on its label.
Independent tests
We found no published independent test of lion's mane products sold in the UK. In tests by a US ingredient maker, two of the compounds it measured varied about 12-fold and 100-fold across seven fruiting-body products [3]. A label that gives more of these figures tells you more about what you're buying.
Lion's mane with ashwagandha
Ours combines the two, with 120 mg of KSM-66 ashwagandha and 500 mg of lion's mane extract in two caffeine-free capsules a day, for calm focus and calm resilience on demanding days. It isn't in the scores, which cover products with lion's mane as the only main ingredient. Our guide to taking lion's mane and ashwagandha together has more on the pair.
How we scored
Every product was scored by the same rules. Capsules and tablets were scored against each other, and powders against each other, not against a target.
- Lion's mane amounts (25 points). Half for lion's mane a day against the most of the same kind in the group, extracts against extracts and whole powders against whole powders, never an "equivalent to" figure. Half for beta-glucans a day against the most in the group. Where a page gives a percentage, we worked out the milligrams. An amount the label and page don't give scores nothing.
- Price a day (20 points). One pack bought once, plus its delivery, divided by the days it lasts at the label's daily amount. Where a label gives a range, we used the lowest amount. The cheapest a day scores 20, the dearest 0 and the rest in between. Where a shop had a sale on, we used the sale price. A label with no daily amount has no cost a day, so it scores nothing.
- Label transparency (20 points). Five points each for giving the amount a day, the part used, beta-glucans or polysaccharides, and the extract ratio or that it's whole, unextracted powder. We counted the label and the page we link to.
- Customer reviews (15 points). Up to 7.5 for how many reviews the page we link to shows, and, from 20 reviews up, up to 7.5 for the average. 4.0 or lower scores nothing and 4.8 or higher scores in full. Trustpilot scores for a whole shop don't count, because they aren't about the product.
- Delivery and returns (10 points). Five for free delivery on one pack. Five for a money-back promise that covers an opened pack, or 2.5 for returns of unopened packs only.
- Ease of use (10 points). Up to 4 for how many you take a day (two capsules or tablets, or one scoop, or fewer scores in full), up to 3 for how long a pack lasts (60 days or more scores in full) and 3 for vegan, or 1.5 for vegetarian.
- The picks follow fixed rules. Best overall and runner-up are the top two capsules or tablets. Best value is the capsule or tablet that costs least a day for each 100 mg of lion's mane, because the cheapest a day would favour the smallest doses. Most beta-glucans has the most a day in either group, and best powder is the top-scoring powder. Each product takes one pick, and where a pick's leader already has one, it goes to the next in line.
We chose the 11 on 17 October 2026 from the UK best sellers on Amazon, the own brands of Holland & Barrett and M&S, and specialist mushroom shops, keeping to products whose only main ingredient is lion's mane. Added vitamins, minerals and black pepper were fine, but other mushrooms and herbs weren't, and gummies, drinks, coffees and liquids were left out. We read each label and the page we link to, and each shop's delivery charge for one pack. Each product links to its own shop, except Yin & Yang Superfoods, which sells only on Amazon. For it we used the one-time price, not Subscribe & Save, and Amazon's free delivery on a first order. Holland & Barrett's powder and the M&S powder are linked on Ocado, where we could check the price, and Ocado's £40 minimum order means neither can be delivered on its own. We left out Real Mushrooms, because we couldn't check a UK price, and Love Mushrooms, because the label on its own page and the one on Amazon list different vitamins.
No brand paid to be included, and we earn nothing from links to other brands. If something here is out of date, tell us and we'll check it.
Frequently asked questions
Is lion's mane better as capsules or powder?
No study has compared them in people. Trials have given lion's mane as capsules, tablets, powder and powder baked into cookies or muffins [6], so the choice comes down to the amount, the price a day and what suits you. The capsules and tablets here cost from 13p to £1.93 a day, and the powders with a daily amount from 10p to 65p.
How much lion's mane should you take a day?
There's no official amount. Trials in healthy adults that ran for several weeks gave 1.8 g a day in capsules [7] or 3.2 g a day of the powdered mushroom [8], and trials overall have used from 1 g to 10 g a day [6]. Products differ a lot in how much they hold, so take the amount on your own label.
What are the side effects of lion's mane?
Side effects reported in trials were mild and uncommon, mainly stomach discomfort, nausea, diarrhoea and headache [6][9]. A US government database rates it an unlikely cause of liver injury, though no trial has been designed to test its safety [9]. Allergic reactions have been reported [6], so avoid it if you're allergic to mushrooms. Check with your GP or pharmacist first if you're pregnant, breastfeeding or take regular medicines, as it hasn't been studied in those situations.
Does lion's mane work?
It has been tested in a handful of small, short trials. A 2024 review called the results "mixed", with some improvement in mood and thinking in middle-aged and older adults [10], and a 2025 review found the effects in trials limited so far [6]. Bigger trials are needed to say more Mixed.
Is Holland & Barrett lion's mane good?
Holland & Barrett sells its own capsules and powder. The capsules give 1,000 mg of a 20:1 fruiting-body extract a day, with 500 mg of polysaccharides, zinc and vitamin B12, and scored 65 out of 100, third of the six capsules and tablets. The powder is whole fruiting body, but its label gives no daily amount, so it has no cost a day to compare.
Where can you buy lion's mane in the UK?
Holland & Barrett sells its own capsules and powder, M&S sells a powder in its shops and through Ocado, and most other brands sell from their own websites and on Amazon. The prices we found on 17 October 2026 are in the label section above.
